The DCC website had low traffic and low user retention. With their brick and mortar location closed at the time, Discovery Cube needed to improve visitation and retention rates on their website. They also needed a long term plan for maintaining a strong online presence in collaboration with an in-person experience once the museum reopened.
I led a team of five designers, which involved taking on a project management role to facilitate client meetings, define project scope, establish project plan, and guide the team to meet deadlines. I also took on the role of UI/UX designer to define the brand aesthetic and assist with wireframes, designs, and prototypes of an online learning website.
Enhance Discovery Cube’s online presence while prompting in-person museum visits
Define the core audience and cater to those users
Increase interest and retention for students, educators, and parents
Creating a site that catered to 3 personas and was simple enough for children, yet sophisticated enough for adults
Increasing STEM interest for children and adults
Giving users a reason to return to the website and promoting interest in visiting the physical museums
A website redesign to create a friendly, clean aesthetic that better aligns with the company branding
Restructure the site architecture to create a user experience guided by user behavior and priorities
Elements of gamification with an award system to make the experience enjoyable and give users a reason to return
User dashboards for tracking progress and behavior monitoring
We looked at articles and online forums to foster insight into market conditions and verify the market needs related to online learning platforms.
A competitive analysis was conducted against direct and indirect competitors within the online learning space. The goal was to understand competitors' strengths and weaknesses in comparison to DCC. We also aimed to identify any exisiting gaps in the market and gain better awareness of pain points.
We conducted 18 interviews with parents, children, and teachers to understand the underlying user behaviors, needs, and pain points related to online learning and various platforms used.
Information from user interviews and the client allowed us to generate 3 target personas - parents, teachers, and kids.
I led multiple design thinking workshop sessions with the design team and with stakeholders for brainstorming and discussing the project direction. I also created story maps to align on the user journey and features we needed.
Our team created wireframes for the entire website to map out the full experience at its core. In the end, we had wireframes for the landing page, sign in/sign up, onboarding, multiple dashboards, activity pages, and user review process.
As part of the process of creating the high fidelity designs, I created a design system with all the styles and components we utilized for the project. The goal here was to speed up the high fidelity design process, create consistency, and provide the client with a component library they can use for expanding on the work we did.
We delivered final high fidelity designs, graphics for the mascot, the design system, and a prototype.
In conclusion, I led my team to redesign the user interface and user experience of Discovery Cube Connect. We created a unique experience that catered to specific user needs in a way that was clear and friendly. We also gathered client feedback throughout the process and evidently delivered a product they were excited about.
Next steps for this would be for Discovery Cube to take the design assets to their developer to begin the engineering process and bring the designs to life.
